going waist deep with Linea Maja ernst, Sherilyn Hellberg and Macon Holt
On June 19th, Linea Maja Ernst will be in conversation with her novel’s English translator, Sherilyn Hellberg, and cultural critic, Macon Holt, to talk about the translation of this very Danish story of the yearning and panic induced by living the “bourgeois bohemian” dream. Ernst’s debut novel, Waist Deep, is a comedy of manners about a group of thirty-something university friends reunited for a week in a countryside summer house and being confronted by how achingly conventional they have become in the years after their radical education.
Linea Maja Ernst is a staff writer at the Danish newspaper Weekendavisen, where she writes about literature, pop culture and private life. Waist Deep is her debut novel and was an instant bestseller on first publication in Denmark in 2024, and has now been translated into ten languages.
Sherilyn Nicolette Hellberg is a writer and literary translator based in Copenhagen. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker and the Paris Review, among other places, and her translation of Jonas Eika’s After the Sun from the Danish was longlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley.
Macon Holt Macon Holt is a writer, critic, teacher and cultural theorist. He is the author of Pop Music and Hip Ennui: A Sonic Fiction of Capitalist Realism. He has a PhD in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London and runs the coaching and advisory service Aesthetic Theory.
