(First two rounds got sold out fast, so there will be an third workshop on the 18th of September)
So, you want to know what the fuck is going on? But do you really need to know? And why on earth would you want that? It can sometimes seem like the world is telling us to want the wrong things. Things we don’t need. And, at the same time, the world tells us that the things we want are wrong. Why would you want to live in a polyamorous, affordable eco-commune when you could live the nuclear family dream in a heavily mortgaged apartment? Why would you want a job that feels meaningful when you could have a job that is a bit evil but well paid? Why would you want to give your money to help starving children in Gaza when you could buy a labubu for your bag?
This time in WTFIGO, we are going to talk about why our wants and needs don’t seem to be being met in this world of ours by looking at two theories of desire: The psychoanalytic concept of desire as the result of an unfulfillable lack (ripe for consumerist exploitation), and Deleuze and Guattari’s idea that desire is a relentlessly productive force (that might spill into schizophrenia). With these, it should be a little easier for us to know what we need to do to figure out what the fuck is going on, and why we want to know.
Bring your own worries along, and a pen and pad, and together we’ll take a little step closer to figuring out what the fuck is going on?
The workshop will be facilitated by Macon Holt, a cultural theorist and writer and the founder of Aesthetic Theory.
