(Sonic Youth, Kill Yr Idols)
What do we talk about when we talk about indie? How the fuck did we go from teenagers recording tapes in their bedrooms to indie-sleaze aesthetics on high fashion runways? Should we leave Spotify, and if so, what’s the alternative? How did Instagram and social media twist the very idea of independent music?
In the first session of the DIY or DIE book club, we’ll dive into the original wave of American indie, the sound of Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Minor Threat, Hüsker Dü, and beyond.
Our guide will be Michael Azerrad’s “Our Band Could Be Your Life” (available to order), a roadmap to the underground revolution that changed everything.
Reading the whole book isn’t mandatory, curiosity and open ears are.
Curated by Alessia Peca — writer, poet, and independent cultural curator, passionate about music. Rooted in the Italian underground scene, after living in Paris for a year, she is now haunting Copenhagen.
